Evolution of a Moth

Updated: Nov 10, 2022

I started doing these little hand stitch projects between my larger ones. It was nice to start and complete something a little quicker. Sometimes my hand stitched dolls can take weeks. Depending on the time I have to work on them. But these little charms are nice and can sometimes whip it up in a day or weekend, depending on the detail.

I did this moth one weekend. Just started drawing out the wings and body. Wasn't sure if it was going to be a moth or butterfly...but something with wings.

I had this piece of lovely soft material. It was a remnant in a buddle I purchased at an old estate sale that had multiple old linen, cotton and lace pieces. Perfect for a soft fuzzy flutter bug.

I stitched the body first. making a tube with a piece of this soft fuzzy fabric. Wrapping it with strong cotton thread giving it a nice distinguished form.

I started adding simple whip stitches to give the wings detail. I had a set for the under wings and one for the upper wings. I let the edges fray of the soft fabric. Loved the look of this and having all the materials the same colors.

I attached the wings, bottom first then the top. Tacking the inside ends of the wings to the the body as well to make more secure. Using multiple strands of cotton thread I attached it's little antennae. Loving it!

I think I will make this a brooch to wear?
